Hip Pain: When to Consider Surgery

If your hip hurts a lot because of certain conditions like arthritis or injuries, and other treatments aren’t working, you might need something called hip replacement surgery. It’s a way to replace the damaged part of your hip so you can move better and feel less pain.

In other words, Various underlying conditions may necessitate hip replacement surgery, including avascular necrosis of the hip joint, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic hip arthritis, and primary hip osteoarthritis.

Types of Hip Replacement Procedures: A Personalized Approach

There are three main types of hip replacement surgery: total hip replacement (THR), partial hip replacement (PHR), and hip resurfacing. Each type of surgery has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best type of surgery for you will depend on your individual circumstances, such as the severity of your hip damage, your age, and your activity level.

Total Hip Replacement (THR)

Total hip replacement (THR) is the most common type of hip replacement surgery. In a THR, the entire hip joint is replaced with artificial implants. The implants are made of metal and plastic, and they are designed to mimic the function of the natural hip joint.

Total hip replacement surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon begins by making a large incision at the front, side, or back of the hip. The surgeon then removes the damaged ball and socket joint. Next, the surgeon prepares the femur and acetabulum (the socket in the pelvis) to receive the new implants. The surgeon then inserts the implants and attaches them to the bone. Finally, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures or staples.

THR surgery is a major surgery, but it is generally very safe and effective. Most patients experience significant relief from pain and stiffness after THR surgery. They are also able to return to most of their normal activities within a few months.

Total hip replacement surgery can be divided into two main categories: traditional and modern. In a previous article, we discussed knee replacement. In this article, we will briefly compare and contrast the two main approaches to knee replacement surgery.

checkblue Traditional Total Hip Replacement Surgery

This time-tested technique involves a slightly larger incision but ensures reliable, long-term results. Dr. Dwivedi’s expertise in this procedure stems from years of experience and a commitment to precision.

checkblue Modern Total Hip Replacement Surgery

A minimally invasive approach, this cutting-edge procedure involves smaller incisions, leading to quicker recovery times without compromising on the quality of the outcome. Dr. Dwivedi’s mastery of this method reflects his dedication to advancing surgical techniques for the benefit of his patients.

Partial Hip Replacement (PHR)

Partial hip replacement (PHR) is a less invasive type of hip replacement surgery than THR. In a PHR, only the damaged ball of the hip joint is replaced. The acetabulum (the socket in the pelvis) is not replaced.

PHR surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia. The surgeon begins by making a smaller incision than is used for THR surgery. The surgeon then removes the damaged ball of the hip joint and replaces it with a metal implant. Finally, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures or staples.

PHR surgery is a good option for younger patients with less severe hip damage. It is also a good option for patients who are not candidates for THR surgery, such as patients with very poor bone health.

Hip resurfacing

Hip resurfacing is the least invasive type of hip replacement surgery. In hip resurfacing, the metal and plastic implants are placed on the existing bone, instead of replacing the entire hip joint.

Hip resurfacing surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon begins by making a small incision at the front or side of the hip. The surgeon then removes a thin layer of bone from the ball of the hip joint. Next, the surgeon caps the ball of the hip joint with a metal implant. The surgeon then prepares the acetabulum (the socket in the pelvis) to receive the plastic implant. Finally, the surgeon inserts the plastic implant into the acetabulum.

Hip resurfacing surgery is a good option for younger patients with early-stage hip arthritis. It is also a good option for very active patients. However, hip resurfacing surgery is not suitable for all patients. For example, it is not a good option for patients with severe hip arthritis or patients with very poor bone health.
